UC Berkeley · Tan Hall: Chris Chang Lab

This project included the renovation of lab spaces to retain two faculty members (a husband and wife) which had been recruited by MIT — see also Lewis Hall: Michelle Chang Lab.

Chris Chang’s lab expansion was to be located on the 5th Floor of Tan Hall but his lab was very chemically intensive and would not be possible in the existing B-Occupancy Building. Working with the Campus Fire Marshal, a strategy for incrementally converting the building to L-Occupancy on a floor by floor basis was developed and the 5th floor conversion to L-Occupancy was included as part of this renovation.

Both of the new Chang labs had safer Grad Student Desk areas located outside of but directly adjacent to the lab spaces and break areas for casual interactions among the research groups.

The Chang lab renovations in both Tan Hall and Lewis Hall will serve as a model for how highly functional and desirable lab space can be created within the aging lab buildings.
